Aquatics Group Fitness

Safe, Supportive, and Challenging Fitness for All Ages

Water Aerobics is back at the Decatur Family YMCA, and we’re excited to welcome you into the pool. Our water-based exercise classes offer a safe and effective way to stay active, improve mobility, and boost cardiovascular health—all while being gentle on the joints.

Exercising in water provides a nearly weightless environment, reducing stress on the body while still allowing for a full-body workout. Whether you're managing arthritis, recovering from injury, or looking for a fun, low-impact fitness option, water aerobics offers something for everyone.

All of our aquatic group classes are led by experienced instructors who are trained to create an encouraging and inclusive environment. Classes range from gentle joint-focused movements to higher-intensity aerobic workouts. Each session lasts 45 to 60 minutes and is free to YMCA members.

Arthritis Program

Designed in partnership with the YMCA Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program, this class is ideal for individuals living with arthritis or other joint concerns. The focus is on improving range of motion, flexibility, coordination, and endurance in a warm water setting.

Class Times (Family Pool):

  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 9:00 AM, 10:00 AM, and 11:00 AM

Participants are encouraged to consult their physician before beginning this program.

Power Waves

Power Waves is a high-intensity cardio workout held in shallow water. It combines endurance training, cardiovascular conditioning, and muscle toning. This class is a great complement to land-based fitness routines and offers a refreshing way to challenge your body.

Class Times (Lap Pool):

  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM

Deep Water Aerobics

This 30-minute class combines cardio, strength, and resistance training—all while being easy on your joints. No swimming skills needed—just a willingness to move and have fun in the water.

Class Times (Lap Pool):

  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 8:30 AM

Thanks to the generous support of the Edward G. Whinnery Trust, we are proud to offer free water exercise classes to active older adult members, helping more people maintain a healthy, independent lifestyle.
